Below is an outline of the features and benefits of Woodwrights high quality furniture and some good reasons for you to invest in unrivalled quality furniture at unbeatable value for money.

Our Timbers

Southland Beech

Beech logs being harvested

Woodwrights is committed to minimalising the environmental footprint, and therefore only use timber harvested from sustainably managed forests. The remote Southern forests of New Zealand, rich in colour and a diverse and abundant habitat, provide us with an environmentally sustainable supply of Maple Beech.

Traditionally this species has been referred to as Silver Beech in New Zealand. As Lindsay and Dixon’s supply is from second crop rotation forest with an average age of 75-80 years, the wood has a very consistent lighter colour, similar in appearance to American Maple.

To reflect these characteristics and customer preference, Lindsay and Dixon market this species as Southland Maple Beech

The Beech species are anatomically similar to Maple, Birch and European Beech.

The timber has the desirable properties of fine even texture and characteristics of even wearing, good machining, turning and finishing qualities.

Maple Beech falls under the general classification of a medium density hardwood.

Uniformity of density within and between logs is an outstanding feature of our resource.

Southland Maple Beech has an attractive appearance and hard-wearing characteristics, making it an excellent choice for our quality furniture.

NZ Heart Rimu

Felling of Rimu logs

New Zealand Rimu is a highly sought after decorative timber featuring a rich colour and attractive grain.

This beautifully figured rich grained species is only available in New Zealand and is sourced from environmentally friendly, sustainably managed forests in both North and South Islands.

All available supplies of Rimu in New Zealand are required to be managed to exacting standards under detailed long term Sustainable Management Plans and permits that are registered against the land. Rimu is harvested under such sustainable forest management plans and permits approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. This guarantees availability of a sustainable supply for future generations.

It is carefully air-dried before being kiln-dried in a low temperature kiln. This provides a stable quality product suitable for our high quality bedroom furniture.

American Ash (White Ash)

American Lumber Company

This lovely, figurative, American Hardwood is grown in the Appalachian Mountains on the East Coast of the United States.

Through careful forest management, the United States is growing more hardwood each year than it harvests, assuring reliable, long term supplies of the finest hardwoods in the world.

We have personally visited sawmills on the East Coast of the United States to carefully select our timber supply. At this time we also gathered valuable knowledge and expertise to successfully manufacture our outstanding hardwood furniture. Unit Carcases

Most units are constructed from Natural timber veneer on the sides and solid timber top, drawer fronts and componentry.

The benefits of using veneer board for the sides is that it is extremely durable, sustainable and preserves our forests, denser than most timbers, does not bow, cup or shrink which means we can confidently offer a Lifetime Guarantee on all of our furniture.

If we were to use solid timber on unit sides that have metal drawer runners, and the side decided to bow or shrink, this would cause the drawers to ‘bind’ and become tight.

There is nothing inferior about veneer as it is used in all Grand Pianos because of its durability and stability and attractive characteristics.

Bedroom unit backs are a 4.75mm laminated ply which is stained and sealed. All bookcases have a 10mm natural timber veneer back, which is designed as a ‘show wood’ back e.g. Because it is seen, we use the same grain as the rest of the unit. This provides a superior finish and increased stability, especially on large bookcases.

Drawers

Dovetail joint detail

All drawer fronts are solid timber, and drawer carcases are laminated pine, which is stronger and more stable because of the extra laminations. These drawers are mostly mounted on metal runners, there is no need for expensive timbers to be used for drawer interiors which are only seen for a very short time.

All drawer sides are dovetailed into the drawer fronts and glued and nailed for additional strength.

Drawer bottoms are a 4.75mm laminated ply, which is lightweight yet very strong.

Drawer showing draw runners

Felt Lining is used in the top drawer of all Bedroom Units to add that extra touch of class.

Drawers on easy opening Soft-Close Drawer Runners (35kg rated) these are full extension which means the entire drawer protrudes beyond the front of the unit when open (unlike cheaper roller runners which stop the drawer about 4 inches from the back when open). These runners have a double row of ball bearings which means the opening and closing of the drawer is not only very quiet but also very precise.

The finish

Each piece is meticulously finished with our quality 6 stage polishing process which consists of a coat of stain, two – three sealer coats, a hand sand and then two top coats for durability and sheen. We typically use a Pre-catalysed single pack lacquer which has a gloss level of 30%.

All tables undergo our durable two-pack lacquer finish which is heat, moisture and more scratch resistant than standard single-pack lacquer.

We also have the ability to custom polish to match your décor. All you need to do is to send us a piece or sample of your existing furniture or décor, and we will match to the best of our ability. We will then send your sample back with your new furniture once it is completed.

Construction Methods

Traditional jointing methods are employed in the construction of all Woodwrights furniture. Quality Dowel joints are used in the construction of all carcases and frames. Traditional Dovetail joints are used on drawers, for that touch of class and added value.

Outdoor furniture is mortised and tenonned for longevity and durability in outdoor settings.

Adhesives and glues

High quality Titebond 50™ glue is used for all laminating and carcase construction. This glue is made in the US and is used extensively throughout the world, by leading manufacturers, for the construction of high quality furniture. This glue is user friendly and has gap filling properties resulting in superior joints with an increased strength factor.

On all outdoor furniture, we use a high quality marine grade, two-pack adhesive, which is designed for the outdoors and the associated challenges.

All hardware is only sourced from renowned NZ importers and distributors. While we offer a wide range of handle options, you are very welcome to provide your own handles if you wish. All hinges and associated hardware are of a very high quality and are covered by supplier Warranties for peace of mind.
